Ohio State Buckeyes star receiver Jeremiah Smith is making the Heisman race more interesting, as if it needed any more hype. He is putting up historic numbers and shows no signs of slowing down.
Smith has over 400 receiving yards in the last three weeks and has scored a receiving touchdown in all but one game. His route running is impeccable, and no one can seem to cover the guy. He also has the Ohio State record for career receiving yards, receptions, and receiving touchdowns.
This season, Smith has 44 receptions for 823 yards and 9 touchdowns (all firsts in the country). Even in the Buckeyes' loss to Texas, he still had 8 receptions for 164 yards and one touchdown. He cannot be stopped.
On Saturday against Maryland, Smith finished the game with 4 receptions for 93 yards and added two more touchdowns. He can run any route in the route tree and often has the defense scrambling. If he gets double-teamed or triple-teamed, he still finds a way to get the ball.
Ohio State has never had a receiver like Smith, literally. His competitor, Malachi Toney, numbers are not as good, but the Canes had a bye week and look to continue their success this season.
Ryan Day marveled at his star receiver, saying, “If it’s one-on-one, he's open. If he's double covered, he’s sort of open. If he’s triple-covered, he’s covered, so that means somebody's got to be open somewhere else. I say that half-kidding.”
He is not kidding; no one can cover Jeremiah Smith. We may never see another receiver like Smith, but until he leaves for the draft it’s a show no one wants to miss.
Smith and Ohio State are only two years removed from being national champions and look to get back to glory. They have a Big Ten championship rematch against No. 7 Indiana next week at Noon ET.
