Jenna Bush Hager Gets a Dramatic Haircut While on Air
Jenna Bush Hager is hoping her daughter focuses on love.
The Today host reflected on a recent homework assignment her and husband Henry Hager’s daughter Mila brought home from school where the 12-year-old had been asked to write about what she wants.
“She wrote so profoundly,” the 43-year-old wrote in her Oct. 6 Voices at the Table Substack newsletter, “it made me teary.”
Among the things Mila wanted?
“I want the world to be peaceful and scary stuff to be fake,” Jenna’s eldest wrote in the assignment, according to a photo shared by Jenna. “I want to meet my mom when she was my age.”
The preteen added that she also wanted to find seagrass in colors she had “never found before,” and also “fall asleep whenever I want” and to “lay in burning hot sand without burning.”
Mila’s responses left Jenna—who is also mom to kids Poppy, 10 and Hal, 6—reflecting on “myself at age 12,” adding, “Was I as worried as Mila is about the plight of the world?”
And Jenna started to wonder how she could best help her daughter, who doesn’t like hearing about the “scary realities of the world at school.”
As the TV host explained, it took her about 24 hours to figure out how best to help her daughter, telling Mila that she should focus on love.

“I responded, telling her that I believe love is the antidote to fear,” she continued, “and by being joyful with people we love, we can combat ‘the scary.’”
Jenna added, “If the opposite of fear is love, and darkness is light, I ask myself and my kids: where do you feel that love?”
For the former First Daughter, she feels it when she’s out in nature, but most of all, when she’s with her children.

“I realized that sometimes I find the most comfort in the beauty and innocence of my children,” she shared. “All I have to do is read their assignments, cuddle with them at night, pay attention to the creative and loving things they say—and then I feel like our world is filled with such profound and sparkly hope.”
