Victor Wembanyama ascended last year to put himself in the conversation for best player in the league, but one former player disagrees with that idea.
Jeff Teague, a former point guard who had found his role in the media, spoke about how Wembanyama's tough start to this season shows he may be a little overrated. That doesn't mean that Teague believes Wembanyama isn't good, more so that he isn't elite just yet.
This came on the heels of the Spurs' game on Friday night, when Wembanyama missed a game-winning layup attempt against the Houston Rockets.
THAT IS INSANITY, AMEN THOMPSON 🤯 HE BLOCKS WEMBY AT THE RIM FOR THE GAME 😲 https://t.co/Tsi70H6exr
— NBA on Prime (@NBAonPrime) October 24, 2026Considering how dominant Wembanyama was during the playoffs last year, it's hard that doesn't have the ability to become a top-three player in the NBA. However, Teague believes that moment is not yet here.
Here's what Teague said about Wembanyama.
Jeff Teague's Victor Wembanyama take
Former point guard Jeff Teague called Victor Wembanyama overrated, but he didn't mean it as a slight on the center. Teague said Wembanyama is still one of the best players in the NBA, but he isn't at the top of the list among the league' best performers.
"When you say rated because they have him rated the best player in the league? He is not the greatest player I've ever seen. He's a top 10 player in the league and he's like number 10," Teague said.

— NBA Courtside (@NBA__Courtside) October 26, 2026After his breakout season last year, Wembanyama rose to become many analysts' pick for the best player in the league. A big reason for that was Wembanyama's strong playoff run, beating the rival Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals to make his first NBA Finals appearance.
Wembanyama's struggles in the NBA Finals didn't deter him from topping many best players' lists, but the center's slow start to the 2026-27 season may be leading to a change of opinion. Teague's take is not that Wembanyama is not good, just that he isn't at the level of players like Nikola Jokic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander quite yet.
Wembanyama has plenty of time to prove he is the best player in the NBA, and Spurs fans may disagree with Teague that there are nine players better than him in the league. It's still early in the season, so Wembanyama can prove Teague wrong this season alone.
