Arizona State continued its late-game magic under coach Kenny Dillingham. This time with Jeff Sims guiding the comeback in place of injured starter Sam Leavitt.

Sims accounted for 288 total yards and three touchdowns, with Jesus Gomez kicking a go-ahead 49-yard field goal in the fourth quarter as the Sun Devils edged West Virginia 25-23 on Saturday.

Arizona State (7-3, 5-2 Big 12) remains in the chase to repeat as Big 12 champions, nearly let a 12-point lead slip away. The Sun Devils surrendered two fourth-quarter touchdowns before Gomez’s kick put them back in front. Keith Abney II sealed the win with an interception with 1:30 remaining.

Sims completed 19-of-28 passes for 207 yards and three scores and added 81 yards on the ground. Derek Eusebio caught six passes for 74 yards and a touchdown as Arizona State returned from its bye with momentum intact.

West Virginia (4-7, 2-6 Big 12) had chances, turning it over twice on downs inside the ASU 6-yard line and getting big plays from Scotty Fox Jr., who threw for 353 yards. But the Mountaineers managed just 68 rushing yards on 39 carries, a number coach Rich Rodriguez said made winning “nearly impossible" on the road.
