Jaylen Brown has finally been traded from the Boston Celtics, and his next team isn't what anyone expected.
Brown is getting traded to the Philadelphia 76ers, with a package of Paul George and multiple draft picks going back to Boston. The news comes from ESPN's Shams Charania.
"BLOCKBUSTER: The Boston Celtics have agreed to trade Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers for Paul George, two first-round picks and two second-round picks, sources tell ESPN," Charania reported.
The 76ers are officially going all in for an NBA title this upcoming season, and a trio of Brown, Tyrese Maxey, and Joel Embiid, along with ascending guard VJ Edgecombe, could be enough to get Philadelphia over the hump.
That said, acquiring Brown cost the 76ers valuable draft capital and a former All-Star on the decline in George. The trade is well worth it for Philadelphia, but they have a little more work to do to ensure Brown is with them for the long-term.
Jaylen Brown contract update after trade to 76ers
After the news broke of Brown heading to Philly, ESPN's Bobby Marks dropped a key contract update on the All-NBA forward.
Marks states that Brown is eligible for an extension on July 26, which could keep him under contract with the 76ers through the 2029-2030 season.
Brown still has three years left on a massive five-year supermax contract he signed with the Celtics in 2023.
"Jaylen Brown: Eligible to sign a 1 year extension on 7/26," Marks wrote on X.
Though we don't know what the official number on the extension will be, it's safe to assume Brown will likely get around $70 million in his next contract with the 76ers, a massive financial commitment to the 2024 Finals MVP.
Paul George is also extension eligible with his move to Boston, though it's highly unlikely the Celtics sign the nine-time All-Star to a lucrative deal after the season he just had.
Overall, Brown is one of the best two-way players in the sport and raises the 76ers' ceiling as title contenders. He deserves as much money as possible, and a fresh start in Philadelphia could elevate his game to new heights, which would be scary for the rest of the league.
