Jaxson Dart gets predicted timeline to take Giants QB job from Russell Wilson

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll has finally got his quarterback in Ole Miss' Jaxson Dart.

Or at least he hopes.

So does Giants general manager Joe Schoen, who, along with Daboll, went through an arduous offseason search to find their next signal caller. They ultimately secured Dart by trading back into the first round to get him. But just in case they couldn’t land a rookie like Dart, the Giants also signed veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston to stabilize the room.

The question now becomes: when will Dart actually get his chance? Will he take over in Week 1, emerge by midseason, or sit and develop behind Wilson, who is currently projected to start?

ESPN's Dan Graziano believes Dart will be under center by November.

Graziano notes that while the Giants are likely to begin the year with a plan to let Dart learn from the bench, that approach rarely sticks—especially when the losses begin to pile up.

"Teams always say they want to give their rookie quarterback whatever time he needs, and they very often say they're willing to sit him the entire season if needed," Graziano wrote. "Think back to last season's Patriots, who started Jacoby Brissett while rookie Drake Maye rode the bench to begin the campaign. But inevitably, once losses start piling up, the team decides it has to make a change."

Graziano pointed to one of the few success stories where sitting a rookie actually worked: Patrick Mahomes backing up Alex Smith in 2017 while the Chiefs started the season 5-0. But that scenario may not apply to the Giants given the difficulty of their 2025 schedule.

"All of the history around these situations tells us Dart will play at some point this season,” Graziano wrote. “Wilson hasn't been a very good starting quarterback for the past four years. Winston is a stopgap guy at this point in his career. Dart is the Giants' future, and unless their present is going to be a very pleasant surprise to a lot of people, they're going to want to get that future going as soon as possible. It could be as early as Week 5 at New Orleans or after the Week 6 Thursday night game against the visiting Eagles or following the Week 8 contest in Philly."

The quarterback situation in New York will definitely be one to watch throughout the 2025 season. Giants fans are hopeful — if not hesitant — about when the future truly begins.
