There were already rumors that the Boston Red Sox were going to move on from Jarren Duran before entering this season, and with the possibility of him being traded prior to how poorly the Red Sox have played this year, it seems all but certain that Boston has to make a move with the outfielder.
The one thing Boston has to remember here is that while Duran seems like a young player, he's not necessarily young at 29 years old.
This is a guy who's looking to get paid and is only losing value by the day. Factor that in with him playing horribly to start the year, hitting .219 with 66 strikeouts and only 18 walks, and Boston probably has no other decision but to move on from him.
While Duran hasn't played well, multiple teams could use him, including the Cincinnati Reds.
The Red Sox have to be hopeful that they can get a decent return for the left-handed hitting outfielder, and Cincinnati might provide that.
“Jarren Duran reinforces an upstart Reds lineup, adding another thrilling speed and power element behind De La Cruz. If Cincy's rotation starts living up to its billing, led by emerging Cy Young candidate Chase Burns, then Duran could be joining a real sleeping giant in the National League — with two additional years of cheap club control, to boot,” Christopher Kline wrote.
There's probably no right or wrong decision that the Red Sox are going to make here with Duran, especially if they view him as a long-term piece.
However, if Boston believes that he's going to walk anyway when the time comes, losing him for nothing would be an absolute disaster for an organization that simply can't be losing guys right now unless they get a decent return.
