Jalen Duren contract drama opens door for Lakers, Warriors and Hornets

1 hour ago 4

Jalen Duren’s future with the Detroit Pistons has become one of the NBA offseason’s most intriguing contract storylines.

The 23-year-old center is locked in prolonged negotiations with Detroit following a breakout season that earned him third-team All-NBA honors. Duren has a strong argument for a lucrative long-term contract, but his postseason struggles have complicated negotiations.

After thriving during the regular season, Duren suffered a dramatic playoff decline as opponents exposed weaknesses in his defensive positioning, decision-making and overall versatility. Those issues contributed to Detroit’s second-round exit and could explain why the Pistons are hesitant to make a massive financial commitment.

If the sides cannot find common ground, several scenarios could eventually emerge.

Detroit could risk losing Duren after contract talks hit a crossroads

Scenario 1: Duren Stays in Detroit

The most logical outcome remains a new contract with the Pistons. Detroit could compromise by offering Duren a shorter deal or a contract containing incentives. Keeping him alongside Cade Cunningham would preserve one of the team’s most dangerous pick-and-roll combinations.

Scenario 2: Charlotte Hornets

Charlotte could become an intriguing destination if Duren reaches unrestricted free agency in 2027. Pairing his athleticism with LaMelo Ball would give the Hornets a powerful rim-running center capable of thriving in transition and pick-and-roll situations.

Scenario 3: Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers are seemingly always searching for frontcourt help. If Duren eventually becomes available, his rebounding and interior presence could make him an attractive target. The biggest obstacle would be creating the necessary financial flexibility.

Scenario 4: Golden State Warriors

Golden State would present a fascinating basketball fit. Duren’s size, rebounding and ability to finish above the rim could provide a different dimension for the Warriors, particularly if they continue reshaping their roster.

A sign-and-trade was rumored earlier this offseason, but such a move becomes increasingly difficult as the summer progresses. Duren could instead accept Detroit’s best offer or play on a qualifying offer and become unrestricted in 2027.

Whatever happens financially, Duren should remain Cunningham’s favorite pick-and-roll partner next season.

Detroit knows Duren can help it win. The bigger question is whether the Pistons believe his regular-season dominance outweighs the weaknesses exposed when the playoffs arrived—and how much they’re willing to pay to find out.
