Jacob Misiorowski passes Randy Johnson on historic strikeout list

Jacob Misiorowski continued his assault on MLB hitters Sunday afternoon. The Milwaukee Brewers ace became the first pitcher to reach 200 strikeouts this season during a dominant opening against the Minnesota Twins at American Family Field.

Misiorowski entered the series finale needing five strikeouts to reach the milestone. He recorded all five before Minnesota completed its first trip through the batting order. The hard-throwing right-hander struck out Royce Lewis and Josh Bell during a perfect first inning. He added punchouts against Kody Clemens and Victor Caratini in the second before retiring Alan Roden for No. 200 to begin the third.

Misiorowski then struck out Ryan Kreidler, giving him six strikeouts through his first eight batters.

Misiorowski Reaches 200 At Historic Pace

Reaching 200 strikeouts on Aug. 9 would be impressive enough. How quickly Misiorowski accumulated them places him among some of the most overpowering pitchers in modern baseball history.

The 24-year-old needed only 129 1/3 innings to record his 200th strikeout. According to MLB researcher Sarah Langs and the Elias Sports Bureau, that is the second-fewest innings required to reach the mark in a season since at least 2000.

Misiorowski reaching the milestone faster than Johnson did in 2001 is staggering.

Johnson finished that season with 372 strikeouts, won the National League Cy Young Award and shared World Series MVP honors after leading the Arizona Diamondbacks past the New York Yankees. Misiorowski still has considerable work ahead before his complete season can be compared to Johnson’s masterpiece. The pace alone demonstrates just how helpless hitters have looked against Milwaukee’s ace.

Brewers Star Strengthens Cy Young Case

Misiorowski’s milestone arrived during another overpowering start. Minnesota managed only one infield single through the first three innings. Six of the first nine outs came on strikeouts, and Milwaukee carried a 1-0 lead after Jackson Chourio opened the bottom of the first with a home run.

Misiorowski has overwhelmed opponents throughout the season with a fastball that routinely exceeds 100 mph and a collection of breaking pitches that prevents hitters from simply gearing up for velocity. His season already includes a 15-strikeout complete game against the Philadelphia Phillies and a start against the Colorado Rockies in which he opened with seven consecutive strikeouts.

Misiorowski recorded 11 strikeouts and allowed no hits through the first four innings against Colorado. He became the first pitcher since at least the beginning of the divisional era in 1969 to produce that combination, according to MLB.com.

His latest achievement adds another historic line to a growing resume. Misiorowski entered Sunday with an 11-5 record, an ERA around 1.60 and an opponents’ batting average below .150. Those numbers have made him one of the leading candidates for the National League Cy Young Award.

The Brewers will eventually face difficult questions about his workload after he surpassed his previous professional high in innings. Milwaukee also owns the best record in baseball and has legitimate World Series ambitions, making every Misiorowski start increasingly important.

For now, there is no slowing him down. Misiorowski became the first pitcher to reach 200 strikeouts this season. He did it before the end of the third inning and faster than nearly every pitcher in modern MLB history.
