Italy boss Gennaro Gattuso sends stern message to Liverpool outcast

Liverpool have been extremely active in this summer transfer window. They have already unveiled Jeremie Frimpong, and the deals of Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez may also happen in the next few days.

The Premier League champions are keen to keep their roster fresh with the aim of title defence for the upcoming season. Hence, there are possibilities of the Reds offloading a few players.

With rumours of signing a new striker, Arne Slot's men need to sell some of their surplus players to facilitate the move.

One of the Liverpool players who is rumoured to leave Anfield is Federico Chiesa. The Italian winger joined the Reds last summer and struggled to cement a place in the starting eleven.

He has only featured in six Premier League games last season, clocking only 108 minutes in total. He started in only one game, and therefore, he hardly had any impact on Liverpool's Premier League triumph.

Chies joined Liverpool for only £10 million plus £2.5 million in add-ons, and in today's day and age, it is a very nominal fee for a player of his calibre. Therefore, Liverpool are not keen to lose him, but given the competition, they may be forced to for the player's sake.

Recently, Gennaro Gattuso was appointed the new manager of the Italian national team. The former Italian midfielder turned coach has replaced Luciano Spaletti, who was relieved of his duties following their 3-0 defeat against Norway in World Cup qualifiers.

“I told Chiesa that he needs to find a way to get settled and play consistently. This applies to everyone,” Gattuso said as quoted by journalist Gianluca Di Marzio."Our doors are always open, but we want Fede to play on a regular basis.”

Interestingly, Chiesa hasn't featured for Italy since last summer's Euros due to injuries and also limited playing time at Merseyside. So this ultimatum from the new Italy boss could push the 27-year-old to seek other opportunities as he would like to continue playing for his country with the World Cup happening next year.

Where could Chiesa end up this summer?

Some reports in Italy have suggested that the 27-year-old forward is looking to make a move out of Anfield this summer. There's a strong possibility of a return to Serie A, and Napoli are one of the prime suitors among other clubs.

In a recent interaction with Football Italia, Chiesa has kept his options open when he was asked about his future at Liverpool. With Massimiliano Allegri joining AC Milan, there's a possibility of him joining the Rossoneri as well, but for now, he is looking forward to the preseason with Liverpool.

"That’s something to think about during the summer," said Chiesa. "My family, my agent and I have a great relationship with Liverpool, and the goal is to be ready for the pre-season. We’ll find the best solution for everyone.

"I work every day with a Liverpool program to be in top shape for the tests on July 8."

Slot has given some indication of playing Chiesa in a no.9 role, so it could be a ploy from the Dutch manager to keep hold of the 27-year-old. But in all likelihood, it looks like Chiesa may leave the Merseyside outfit this summer.
