Since SEC Media Days last week, the talk has been quarterback Arch Manning and the Texas Longhorns.
The Longhorns are not only picked to win the SEC this year, but they are expected to contend and win the Longhorns' first national championship in almost 20 years, and the man they believe will bring it to them is Manning.
The Arch Manning hype got even bigger when college football analysts and talk show host Paul Finebaum added his two cents about the star quarterback.
A few weeks ago, when Finebaum appeared on ESPN’s “First Take”, he compared Manning to another SEC great, Tim Tebow.
Tebow won a Heisman Trophy and led the Florida Gators to a national championship.
“Arch Manning is the best college football quarterback we have seen since Tim Tebow entered the scene in 2006.”
That’s a lot of pressure to put on a young man who is just beginning his full season at the starting quarterback position for the Longhorns.
Manning has only thrown 33 passes in his young college career as a starter when Quinn Ewers suffered an injury last year, but that was against a very bad Mississippi State team.
Manning looked good in that game, but it was Mississippi State, now, the rest test comes; playing against quality SEC opponents.
The Longhorns have to play at Georgia, at Florida, then later in the season host Vanderbilt and Texas A&M, not to mention they kick the season off with defending champion Ohio State. They also will likely have to face a highly ranked opponent in the SEC Championship game.
Texas has yet to prove it can beat the big boys of the SEC and has struggled at times against SEC opponents, including Georgia in the SEC Championship game, a game they were favored to win.
Manning has the potential to be one of the best, but so were both his uncles and his grandfather, who also entered their junior and senior seasons with high expectations for winning the Heisman and a national championship, none of which happened. It will be interesting to see how and if Manning can handle those high expectations.
