Sam Leavitt reportedly suffered a season-ending injury, according to Sun Devils coach Kenny Dillingham. The Big 12 preseason offensive player of the year will undergo foot surgery, ending his time under center in 2025.
The former four-star won't travel with the team to Iowa State for Saturday's game as he prepares to go under the knife. Leavitt sustained the injury Sept. 20 against Baylor and has been dealing with it since. Jeff Sims will get the start for Arizona State in Ames.
Leavitt completed 18-of-35 passes for 270 yards and a touchdown last week vs. Houston, but exited in the fourth quarter. The redshirt sophomore has 1,628 passing yards with 10 touchdowns and three interceptions this season for Arizona State, which dropped to 5-3 following the Houston loss.
"It's definitely something that's been lingering all year," Dillingham said this week about Leavitt's injury. "It's definitely something that could definitely turn into that (long-term) for sure, just because it hasn't progressed like we hoped. He's been dealing with this for pretty much the whole year."
Sam Leavitt's 2025 stats
Through eight games, Leavitt has completed 63.7% of his passes for 1,628 yards and 10 TDs with three interceptions. Last week was Leavitt's fourth straight 200-yard game.
Leavitt led ASU to their first Big 12 title and a College Football Playoff appearance in 2024. He threw for 2,885 yards with 24 touchdowns and six interceptions. He entered the season as one of the nation's top quarterbacks and looked to repeat as conference champs.
Who is Jeff Sims?
Sims made two previous stops in his collegiate career. After starting at Georgia Tech, the Nebraska transfer has settled down in Tempe with the Sun Devils. He has plenty of experience with 26 starts under his belt. However, this is just the second one at ASU.
Sims has completed 429-of-754 (56.9%) passes for 5,096 yards with 32 touchdowns and 29 interceptions in six years of work over the three stops. This will be his first significant time at Arizona State.
"I think it's just trust," Dillingham said this week about his relationship with Sims. "We trust him. He trusts us. I think the trust and the honesty and the transparency is something our primers are with. He trusts us. I think he's got a long, crazy career. I think it's pretty cool for him to be able to really finish this thing out and play a few games. And I'm excited to go watch him play this week."
Arizona State heads to Iowa State on Saturday (1 p.m. ET, TNT).
