Those living and working near MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, were greeted with a shocking sight on Friday morning. Billows of smoke appeared to be coming from the colossus, which serves as home to the Jets, Giants and -- in a little more than a month, World Cup matches.

The sight was no illusion. There was, indeed, a fire that swept over a nearby neighborhood. However, that blaze didn't actually come into contact with the 82,500-seat stadium.

Here's what you need to know about the fire that had some believing MetLife Stadium was burning.

Is there a fire at MetLife?

No, there was no fire at MetLife Stadium. The smoke that emanated from behind the Jets and Giants' home actually came from an inferno that erupted in Carlstadt, a small town located three miles away from East Rutherford.

MetLife fire details

According to NJ.com's Victoria Gladstone, officials received reports of the fire at around 9:50 a.m. ET on Friday morning. The blaze scorched a building on Washington Avenue, located just three miles from the Jets and Giants' home ground.

Police said no injuries have been reported. The fire is reportedly "under control", per Gladstone. Firefighters are still on the scene, working to put out the flame.
