The United States had a bizarre first period at the 2026 Winter Olympics in the men's hockey tournament.

They scored three goals against Latvia, but only one of them counted. Two were disallowed after challenges by the Latvian coaching staff.

Latvia scored once, too, so it was 1-1 after the first period of play.

A number of the U.S. stars made impacts, but one guy who was a bit quiet: Jack Hughes.

Is Jack Hughes playing today?

Yes, Jack Hughes is active and playing for Team USA on Thursday against Latvia.

Hughes has played a normal number of shifts in the first period.

He wasn't on the ice when the goal was scored with the forward line of Jack Eichel-Matthew Tkachuk-Brady Tkachuk.

Hughes is part of what looks to be the fourth line on paper. Brock Nelson is the center of that group, along with the wingers Hughes and J.T. Miller.

They were out there on a tipped goal from Nelson that was disallowed due to goalie interference by Miller.

Jack Hughes' brother, Quinn, is a first-pairing defenseman who has already played big minutes in the first period and likely will all tournament.

Their mother, Ellen, is at the game and also a player development coach for the U.S. women's team.

Their brother, Luke, is likely in town, too. He wasn't chosen for Team USA but plays with Jack on the Devils.
