Knoxville, Tennessee, is the center of the college football universe this Saturday, as Texas comes to town to play Tennessee in a crucial SEC matchup.

ESPN's "College GameDay" will be on campus to help promote the game, but the crew is not the biggest game attendees. That would be President Donald Trump, who is set to make an appearance at Neyland Stadium to take in the noon ET game.

Trump has frequently attended sporting events in his professional capacity over the last decade, especially for college football games. As expected, Trump's presence will also come with complications, including extra security throughout the area.

What makes this unique is that Trump will be arriving in Knoxville at the same time "College GameDay" will air, creating the possibility that he makes an appearance on the show. That is something Trump has never done while going to these sporting events.

Why is Donald Trump at the Texas vs. Tennessee game?

It's unclear what the exact reason is for Trump attending the Texas-Tennessee game in Knoxville, but there are a few possibilities.

First, Congress is currently discussing passing the Protect College Sports Act, a bill that Trump has supported as a way to provide structure to college sports. Attending this game could have to do with the bill being close to passing.

Second, the midterm elections are quickly approaching as Trump stumps for other conservative politicians. While this game is not in Austin, the Texas elections are setting up to be very contentious come November.

Finally, Trump simply enjoys attending sporting events while in office. He has been to several important games, from the Super Bowl to the NBA Finals to the College Football Playoff national championship. 

What to know about Donald Trump's visit

While Trump will be in attendance at Neyland Stadium, he will not be the special guest picker on College GameDay, nor is he expected to appear on the show at all.

Trump's attendance will, of course, come with a bulk of extra security by the local law enforcement and the Secret Service. The University of Tennessee police expects longer entry lines for getting into the stadium, as fans should get to the stadium earlier than expected.

Additionally, Tennessee is providing more security checkpoints and verification areas around the stadium to try and streamline the security process. There will be temporary road closures and traffic control measures as part of the pre-game process.

During the game, Trump's attendance actually provides complications for both teams participating in the game. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said he expects headset communication to go down whenever Trump changes location in the stadium.

Donald Trump history attending college football games

Since entering politics, Trump has attended many college football games as both the president and while campaigning during the presidential election.

Trump has attended three national championship games: Alabama's win over Georgia in Atlanta in 2018, LSU's win over Clemson in New Orleans in 2020 and Indiana's win over Miami in Miami in 2026.

As for the regular season, Trump attended LSU's win over Alabama in 2019, Iowa's win over Iowa State in 2023 and several Army vs. Navy contests.
