Is D'Andre Swift returning in Week 10? Latest injury update on Bears running back

1 hour ago 1

The Chicago Bears were missing a key piece of their offense in what was a thrilling Week 9 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, as running back D'Andre Swift was sidelined due to an injury.

Swift had been dealing with a groin issue for multiple weeks before he finally succumbed to the injury in Week 9, leading to his being ruled out.

The Bears running back was not able to log a single practice over the course of the week before Chicago ruled Swift out on Friday.

Here's what we know about his chances of playing in Week 10 against the New York Giants.

Is D'Andre Swift returning in Week 10?

Bears head coach Ben Johnson labeled Swift as week to week when he ruled him out on Friday, so that leaves the door open for Swift to miss multiple games.

Johnson went on to add that Swift has been dealing with his groin issue since the Washington Commanders game and the team is trying to get him healthy for the remainder of the season.

"I think it goes probably earlier than [the Commanders game] that he's been feeling something," Johnson explained. "And so we're just doing our due diligence to make sure that we're getting the best version of Swift to help this team, for him and his individual success. We just want to make sure that we have him in a good spot for the whole season.

"It's a week-to-week deal with where he's at. But he understands, he's a tough guy. I mean, he wants to be out there competing and playing for his teammates. He wants to win games, help his team win games. A little bit for us is we got to protect him from himself, too," Johnson added.

Swift did not practice at all last week and the Bears ruled him out on Friday, so that means he wasn't anywhere close to playing, which is obviously not a great sign for Swift's chances of playing this week.

Then, there's this, also: the Bears brought in a slew of running backs for tryouts on Tuesday, which indicates they expect to be short-handed at the position this week.

It is important to note, however, that fellow running back Roschon Johnson is dealing with an injury as well, so it's possible the tryouts were in response to Johnson's injury and not Swift's.

Or, it's quite possible the tryouts were a response to both players' statuses.

Right now, we would consider Swift's status 50/50, at best. We'll have a better idea of where he stands on Wednesday, when Chicago puts out its first injury report.

Who is D'Andre Swift's handcuff?

That would easily be rookie Kyle Monangai, who shined in Swift's absence last week and has been operating as Chicago's clear RB2 all season long.

Monagai went off for 176 rushing yards on 26 carries and added three receptions for 22 yards. He's a clear-cut RB2 play with RB1 upside in Week 10 if Swift is out.
