The Seattle Mariners didn't keep Colt Emerson on the Opening Day roster.
That didn't stop them from giving him a massive contract only days after the season has begun.
This is what MLB insider Robert Murray reported on X on Tuesday morning:
"Colt Emerson and the Seattle Mariners are in agreement on an eight-year, $95 million contract extension, sources say. The deal includes a ninth-year club option, a full no-trade clause and escalators that can bring it north of $130 million."
Emerson, a shortstop, is a top-10 prospect in the entire sport. And now the Mariners have essentially secured him for the first eight years of his MLB career -- which includes buying out his first two years of free agency.
The news also raises another question.

Is Colt Emerson getting called up?
Multiple insiders reported the contract news on Tuesday, but none of them said Emerson was coming to the major leagues.
Despite that, it can't be long now.
The Mariners obviously want to be sure Emerson is ready, but there are also some contract incentives to leaving a guy down in the minor leagues for a month-plus to being the season.
Now that Emerson is signed long term, those incentives no longer apply.
Seattle could use Emerson, particularly with J.P. Crawford out with an injury. The news of a promotion may come very soon.
