And it could end up meaning major shakeup after the 2025-26 NHL season is actually over, because this has been brutal for pretty much everyone involved.
NHL insider Chris Johnston spoke on 1050 AM earlier this week and said, "Nobody would be feeling safe right now with this organization."
That means head coach Craig Berube.
That means GM Brad Treliving.

That means all the players who have been involved in trade rumors, even the craziest ones like Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies.

There's some feeling that cleaning house may be necessary, that half measures won't be enough to lead to a bounce back for a team that had talent yet played like one of the worst in hockey this season anyway.
The Maple Leafs made a few trades before the March 6 NHL trade deadline, but those were about players on expiring contracts for the most part.
When the summer arrives, and the Maple Leafs take a look at their roster as a whole, there will be more decisions to make.
It also remains to be seen whether Treliving or Berube will be involved in those choices at all. After all, their jobs might not be safe in the first place.
