Is 2026 year of left-handed pitcher? Detroit Tigers’ Tarik Skubal, peers making early case

1 hour ago 3

Detroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal promises to dominate MLB headlines in 2026.

Not only is the back-to-back Cy Young award recipient chasing a rare trifecta as the AL’s top pitcher, but with his future destination in doubt, Skubal’s movements likely will be well-tracked leading to the trade deadline.

His Opening Day start at the popular Petco Park appeared like he was in control of the potential chaos of chasing a pennant as a pending high-profile free agent.

Skubal earned the win Thursday, limiting the San Diego Padres to one run on three hits through six innings. He struck out six and walked none. Typical Skubal.

The Tigers’ ace wasn’t the lone southpaw to discover Opening Day success. The lefties were lining up quality starts.

Left-handed pitchers continue to dominate MLB

Strengthening the trend from 2025, left-handed pitchers continue to emerge as some of the league’s top starters. Five elite lefties outside of Skubal – Philadelphia Phillies’ Cristopher Sanchez, Baltimore Orioles Trevor Rogers, Boston Red Sox’s Garrett Crochet, Cincinnati Reds’ Andrew Abbott and New York Yankees’ Max Fried – tossed a combined 31.1 scoreless Opening Day innings, surrendering just 21 hits.

Sanchez finished off the Texas Rangers, compiling 10 strikeouts and zero walks in six innings.

In 2025, major-league southpaws compiled the fourth-lowest earned-run average since 1900, according to MLB Now.

From early returns, lefties could again dominate the major-league landscape for the near future.

No matter where Skubal ends up playing next.
