Iowa high school baseball: Key performances from opening day

The Iowa high school state baseball tournament kicked off Monday from Carroll and Sioux City, as action got underway on the diamond.

Here are some of the top individual performances from the opening round of games:

Class 1A

  • Rowan Miller, Hillcrest Academy: Miller collected two hits and scored a run as Hillcrest Academy knocked off No. 1 Remsen St. Mary's, 3-1.
  • Seth Ours, Hillcrest Academy: Ours pitched six innings, allowing just three hits while striking out three against the top-ranked team.
  • Collin Homan, Remsen St. Mary's: In a tough loss, Homan struck out seven and collected two hits at the plate for the Hawks.
  • Travis White, Martensdale-St. Marys: White was dealing, striking out nine with just three hits and no walks in a 2-0 win over Kee. He also had two hits and drove in a run at the plate.

Class 3A

  • Brandon Cummer, Dubuque Wahlert: Cummer had two hits and drove in a run to lead Wahlert ot a 3-1 win over Boone.
  • Will Pierro, Dubuque Wahlert: Pierro got the start, striking out eight over four-plus innings of work on the mound.
  • Luke Moore, Boone: Moore delivered a double, driving in a run while finishing with two hits in a loss.
  • Kamden Jorgensen, Saydel: The state's home run leader added another, belting a longball and a double as the Eagles topped Davenport Assumption, 6-4. 
  • Turner Bennett, Saydel: Bennett added two RBI with a hit for Saydel in the win at state.
  • Isiah Rose, Davenport Assumption: Rose had two hits and scored a run, recording a double.
