Iowa Hawkeyes football's magic number is 21 points

Iowa's football program isn't known for its offense.

The Hawkeyes always have one of the best defenses in the country, though.

And the way that plays itself out lends itself to one magic number: 21.

The Hawkeyes have scored 21 points in a game 33 times since 2020.

In those 33 games, Iowa is 32-1.

If they score 21, they're almost unbeatable.

That's how good their defense is.

Now it's getting to that 21 that can sometimes be a problem, especially against the best programs in the Big Ten.

But if they get there, look out.

And this season, there's reason for optimism in Iowa.

Tim Lester is entering his second season as the offensive coordinator for the Hawkeyes after replacing Brian Ferentz.

They've also brought in two-time FCS national champion Mark Gronowski to play quarterback. He was one of the best players in the country at South Dakota State.

There's a chance Iowa hasn't had a quarterback like this guy in a long, long time.

So you combine some continuity with Lester and a new star QB and there's a chance at great things in Iowa this season.

Their task still isn't easy. The Big Ten is still loaded.

But finally, the Hawkeyes look ready to shine not just on one but on both sides of the ball.

And if they can really do that, there could be magic for the Hawkeyes. After all, the magic number is 21. Just get there, and great things will happen.
