Insider names ‘team to watch’ in Giannis Antetokounmpo trade sweepstakes

The Damian Lillard injuries hurt the Milwaukee Bucks during that first round series loss to the Indiana Pacers. But even still, not one player stepped up to support Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The Greek Freak ended up accounting for 30 percent of the points, 35 percent of the rebounds, and 28 percent of the assists for Milwaukee in that 4-1 series loss. He led the team in points, rebounds, assists, and blocks.

It's been a while since Antetokounmpo had a proper supporting cast. They have lacked in both athleticism and ability to perform in pressure situations. Not to mention the coaching debacles over the last couple of years. It's safe to say, at this point, he's more likely to leave than to stay this time around.

A new three-year, $175 million deal goes into effect for Giannis this offseason, but that doesn't mean he's remaining in Milwaukee. If anything, all it means is that the Bucks will be able to extract a higher toll from their trade partner since Giannis is under contract until 2027, with a player option for 2028.

Giannis has been top four in MVP voting for six straight years. And still at just 30 years old, he doesn't seem to be slowing down. He averaged 30+ for the third straight season in 2024-2025.

Up-and-coming team from the West could make play for Giannis

No doubt every team in the land will inquire about Giannis Antetokounmpo and the price tag the Bucks decide to put on him in the trading market. According to NBA insider Brian Windhorst, one of those that are "a team to watch" in the 2025 summer chase for Giannis are the young and exciting San Antonio Spurs.

They have the fifth-most available cap space in the league. And while they don't have the draft capital of say an OKC Thunder or Brooklyn Nets, they have a lot of young talent to entice the Bucks.

We hate to say it, but a trade for Giannis with the Spurs would probably have to center on recent 2025 Rookie of the Year recipient Stephon Castle.

Any team would be lucky to have Giannis, but the Spurs are one of the few that might need to shift things around prior to his arrival. Other than Devin Vassell, they really don't have any long-range shooters on the wing.

Victor Wembanyama can shoot the three, but you don't want his job to be spacing. De'Aaron Fox isn't a great shooter either, so if they did trade for Giannis (who also doesn't shoot the three), they would need to acquire one or two additional shooters to help space the floor.

If they do that, San Antonio's international Two Towers redux with Wemby and Giannis down low and Fox and Chris Paul in the back court would be unstoppable.
