Injured Trent Grisham could miss rest of regular season as Spencer Jones makes his Yankees case

SAN DIEGO – Trent Grisham has the same level hamstring strain as he had in June, when he missed three weeks.

With three weeks left in the regular season, that means the Yankees center fielder “could be” out for the rest of it, Aaron Boone acknowledged Sunday.

“We’ll see,” Boone said before the series finale at Petco Park. “We’re not putting a timetable on it right now. Keep him moving and see how long it takes.”

After suffering the injury Friday night, Grisham underwent tests on Saturday that revealed a moderate, Grade 2 strain in his right hamstring — the same one he hurt in June, but in a different spot.

For the second straight day, Grisham was out on the field before Sunday’s game doing some light jogging and agility drills. But whether that leads to a shorter absence than the last time remains to be seen.

“He is doing well enough to be able to move right away, which is a good sign,” Boone said. “So he’s already doing things right now. Ultimately we’ll see how long it takes.’

Even if Grisham can return before the regular season ends, there is no guarantee he will get his job back in center field, as Spencer Jones had already threatened to overtake him there when Aaron Judge returns as soon as this week.

Now, Jones will get most of the playing time in center field down the stretch, trying to build on his recent surge that had him hitting .303 with an .881 OPS over his last 23 games entering Sunday.
