Celebrity Deaths: 2025’s Fallen Stars
New details about Rolling Ray’s death have emerged.
One month after the social media star—who amassed an internet following after appearances on Catfish: Trolls and Divorce Court—died at age 28, his family confirmed to The Washington Post that he passed away due to natural causes.
Ray’s death was reported Sept. 3, two days shy of his 29th birthday, a spokesperson for Maryland's Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed to People at the time. His relatives also shared their grief in the wake of his loss.
“I am sitting in my room with tears rolling down my cheeks,” Ray’s cousin, known as Coolest Kishia, wrote on Facebook following his death, adding a series of broken heart emojis. “I am so heart broken. I don’t have words for this right know u are my favorite cousinnnnwhy u dogged me like this.”
Ray (real name Raymond Harper) was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy at 15 months old, leading him to be wheelchair-bound at age 10, according to with The Washington Post. But in spite of the influencer’s physical setback, his longevity proved to be a medical miracle.
“At first they said I was going to die at 14 years old. The doctor was wrong,” he said in a November 2023 interview with I Got Time Today. “Science changed and doctors are not always right. God is good.”
As the content creator’s public profile grew, he went on to appear in several Zeus Network series including Bobby I Love You, Purr and The Conversation. He was also credited with the popularization of the slang term “purr,” commonly used to convey excitement or approval.
But Ray’s successes were also accompanied by a number of health struggles, which he often detailed online, such as his repeated cases of pneumonia.
“It wasn’t easy not being able to speak but it all worked out,” he said on Instagram in August 2024. “I fought, not just for me but for my fans, family, friends & haters!”
