I came home from work this past Tuesday and while my wife and I were preparing dinner, she noticed that the cat was missing. Our cat hides a lot and so my initial reaction

  • 03

was that she was probably in a closet or something. Wife starts looking...and looking...and looking. Nothing. Panic sets in because she is a Devon Rex

  • 04

and definitely an indoor cat. We move outside calling her name and telling neighbors. One of our neighbors tells us to post on the neighborhood Facebook. Wife is hyperventilating

  • Ah, it is always the indoor cats that are super excited to escape their golden cages to see what boundless possibilities exist on the other side of the front door to their home. The irony being that when they get out there not only do they immediately realize that they have made a grave mistake about their judgement of the outdoors, but they also realize just how poorly suited they are for the outdoor life. Some of them might as well be beanie babies for how unsuited they are to the world outside.

because while we both love this cat, she is 100% my wife's favorite. The sunlight has faded so we head back to the house. I print out some lost cat posters and we go

  • 07

to stop signs in our neighborhood. We put food and items with our scent outside and crack the garage door. We go to bed, try not to cry, cry a lot, then fall asleep.

I've never been emotional about animal dns/disappearanc es before but this one hit me hard. I woke up throughout the night thinking about what I could've done

differently. She most likely got out when I let our dogs out in the morning. I was careless and didn't watch the door while putting food in their bowls. It weighed heavy on me and I

  • 10

blamed myself for the whole thing. I got maybe 3 hours of sleep that night. The rest of the week continued as we continued to check outside our house and walk the

neighborhood in the evenings. We also used a paid service through lostmykitty.com that advertised being 85% successful. The option we chose include an Amber

  • 12

Alert style call to 500 people in our area. We also, had fantastic support from friends, family, and co-workers checking in to make sure we were doing alright.

  • Well now, that is quite the potentially useful service in a terrible time like this. The efforts that one must go through to bring back a lost indoor cat are unreal. The main issue being that more often than not your cat is not far away, they are just hiding in a bush somewhere. And the reason that they do not simply leave the bush and come to you is that they are too proud to admit their mistakes. So by coming to you when you call they would be admitting they were wrong and were better off to remain an indoor prince rather than chase a life of thrill and excitement outdoors. They are far too proud for that.

However, each day was discouraging. I asked a neighbor if they received the amber call and they had not. I kept wanting to see or hear our cat that my mind was playing tricks on me. We

morning! While cooking breakfast, I got a call from someone in the neighborhood that saw our cat 30 minutes earlier. Obviously, we ran out the door (almost

forgot to turn off the stove) and drove over to the location described. At first we couldn't find her but a little patience paid off as we spotted her slinking along a
