The Indiana Hoosiers may be unbeaten, but the College Football Playoff Selection Committee probably isn’t going to view them as the No. 1 team in the country when the inaugural CFP rankings are released on November 4.
Following the Ohio State Buckeyes’ 38-14 win over the Penn State Nittany Lions at the “Shoe” on Saturday, CBS Sports’ David Cobb revealed that there was an overwhelming likelihood OSU will be named No. 1 over IU this Tuesday.
Cobb believes the Buckeyes’ 14-7 win over the Texas Longhorns in Week 1, which looks stronger after the latter’s 34-31 win over the Vanderbilt Commodores, plus the rest of the 18-or-more-point victories against every other team on their schedule, comfortably slots Ohio State into the No. 1 spot.
“Ohio State has officially rested its case to be ranked No. 1 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings, which will be released next week. The Buckeyes beat the AP poll's preseason No. 1 team, Texas, in their season opener by a score of 14-7 and have defeated everyone else since then by at least 18 points. While the schedule hasn't featured an abundance of strong tests since the Texas game, the Buckeyes have never looked anything less than elite. Big Ten counterpart Indiana could also have a strong case to be No. 1 considering it won at Oregon on Oct. 11 and has been similarly dominant throughout the season. However, there aren't many holes to find in Ohio State's case to be considered the nation's top team,” Cobb wrote.
Indiana’s best win is better than Ohio State’s
What’s frustrating to many Hoosier fans is the fact that Indiana’s 30-20 win over the Oregon Ducks at Autzen Stadium a few weeks back was a better victory than any that OSU has on its resume.
Unfortunately, the Hoosiers drew an unimpressive opponent with little brand value, the Maryland Terrapins, right before the CFP rankings’ first release.
It’s bad timing, but the defending champions have also looked impossibly dominant. Regardless, it’s not the first rankings that matter, but the final rankings.
Cignetti still has time to rectify those.
