Iga Swiatek's coach, Wim Fissette, has shared his candid assessment of the Pole's 2025 season. Fissette also offered an insight into the World No. 2's refreshed mindset regarding the areas for improvement in her game.
Although Swiatek suffered a crushing loss to eventual champion Madison Keys in the semifinals of the 2025 Australian Open and failed to win a title in the lead-up to the French Open, she was expected to return to winning ways at the claycourt Major. However, Aryna Sabalenka halted the Pole's bid to win her fourth consecutive Roland Garros title by triumphing in their semifinal clash.
Iga Swiatek then appeared at risk of ending the year without a Grand Slam title under her belt, but she defied expectations with a remarkable run at Wimbledon. Despite her underwhelming record at SW19 in the past, the 24-year-old defeated Amanda Anisimova 6-0, 6-0 in the final to clinch her sixth Major title.
While rating Swiatek's 2025 season on Break Point, her coach Wim Fissette expressed his belief that the Pole's year would go down in history because of her "unreal" triumph at the grasscourt Major.
"Well first of all, 2025 will be a year for Iga that will go into history. Winning Wimbledon, where nobody was expecting that, and the way she did it. That is something we will think about in 10, 20, 30 years. This was just like unreal. So only even just with this performance, 2025 was a fantastic year," Fissette said.Fissette also took pride in achieving his goal of helping Iga Swiatek improve on faster surfaces, citing her impressive victory at the Cincinnati Open. He revealed that the success had given the World No. 2 confidence in her ability to be competitive, regardless of the speed of the surface.
"One of the goals when I started was to play better on the faster surfaces and to be more comfortable. That’s a goal we clearly achieved. You saw the result in Cincinnati as well, and that is something that Iga will take also in the next years to know, 'It doesn’t matter what surface, if it's slow or fast, I'm actually competing for the title. I know I can do that. I need to make a few adjustments, but I can do that,'" he added."I think we made a good change of that mindset right there" - Iga Swiatek's coach Wim Fissette on his hopes for 2026

"And yeah I think we went through a few phases in the year where I saw, in the middle of the year, and that was before Wimbledon, also a clear change in the mindset of, 'I want to develop, I want to become a better player, I want to improve,'" Fissette said during the same interview. "And you saw also shots, like the serve, where Iga was more the player to start the point with the serve, instead of really believing she could win points more with her first serve."Fissette also praised the six-time Grand Slam champion for her changed approach on the court and said that he hoped to continue building on that progress in the new season.
"She started doing that on the grass and that’s part of the success that she had in Wimbledon and Cincinnati. So I think we made a good change of that mindset right there. And yeah, we hope of course we can continue that in 2026," she added.Iga Swiatek is set to kick off her 2026 season by representing Poland at the United Cup, which will begin on January 2. The World No. 2 will then turn her attention towards the Australian Open as she aims to complete the Career Slam by clinching her maiden title at the Major.
