[Am I wrong] for telling my neighbor to stop slandering me for what happened to her cat?

'She allows her cat, unsupervised, onto your property, [and] you're an irresponsible cat owner?'

I have an older cat Marin who, before coming to me, had an accident. Now, both of her back paws are practically useless. She can't climb, has trouble jumping, and so on. That said, I let Marin out into the garden for three (always the same) hours

  • 03

every day. She basks in the sun, hunts for bugs, and rolls on the ground and then back inside. Marin is not aggressive... unless another cat or dog appears in garden. But this has never been a problem before.

  • 04

Three months ago, a new neighbor "Lisa" moved in next door. It turned out she had a small cat "Theo" and let it outside. One time, I saw her cat climb a tree and jump into my garden.

  • 05

I managed to catch Theo, and Marin just growled at him a little. I carried Theo back to the neighbor and explained the situation to her.

Two weeks later, Theo showed up again, and this time I only found out when Marin started meowing loudly. I managed to catch him again, examined him, and found one scratch, but it didn't look serious. So I took Theo to Lisa again.

  • Marin is not to blame for any of this, if you ask us. Wouldn't you also defend yourself if someone came barging into your home? Marin is simply protecting her and her hooman's territory; it's not her fault the other cat doesn't understand that. At least her pawrent is supervising her while she's outside.

A week has passed. My friend who lives nearby sent me screenshots from our neighborhood's group. Lisa took pictures of her cat (who now looked worse, had eye covered with bandage, etc.), a picture of Marin in my garden, etc., and

  • 09

wrote a long post about how Marin almost k■ed Theo and how I was an irresponsible cat owner. Several other neighbors spoke out, complaining that they had to stop letting their cats out because of this. Some people said Lisa should sue me or charge me for a vet.

  • 10

When my friend sent it to me, new comments kept appearing, so I decided I needed to talk to Lisa. I told her that yes, I can pay for the vet, but I would like to see that Theo actually had all those wounds, because I literally didn't see any of them when I dropped him off, and yet she claimed it happened right after that incident.

  • 11

Conversation didn't last long because Lisa had to go to work, but it seemed we were reaching an understanding. She promised to send me papers she received from the vet, which listed all the injuries and the cost of treatment.

  • 12

Well, that never happened. To this day, I haven't received any confirmation from her.

  • 13

But my friend sent me another post... in which Lisa claims I'm avoiding her and she's practically calling for the neighbors to unite and get rid of my Marin. Various ideas are floated there, from calling the police to even p■soning food.

  • This is just terrible. Some people will go so far to make sure that they're not purrceived as the “bad guy”, but what these people don't understand is that lies will always come back to bite you eventually. It may not be immediately, but we live in a world where anyone who looks close enough can figure something out.

  • 14

This time, instead of talking, I sent Lisa a message telling her to stop lying and that if she wanted the money, she needed to show some proof. I also told her that if the situation continued, I would eventually report it to the police.

  • 15

Of course, I don't let Marin into the garden alone at this moment.

  • 16

What's bothering me is that my father, who knows about the whole situation, is trying to blame me for it all, saying I should just pay instead of making a fuss. On the one hand, he's important to me, and I wouldn't expect such reaction from him, but on the other, he doesn't like cats and he said several times that I should get rid of Marin.

  • 17

I don't know if this will help, but we are in France

Bumblebee-Honey-Tea 23h ago . Don't pay the vet bill just because she's bu ying you. Her cat is literally coming into your yard and haring your handicapped cat! If you're willing to pay a vet bill, buy a security camera instead and catch her cat in the act.

  • 20

Regular Cloud7798 • 23h ago If you're in the UK I would love to hear what they are going to tell the police... My cat went into someone else's yard and got harassed by another cat... That's a ludicrous thing to say out loud.

So Lisa is trying to claim that because she allows her cat, unsupervised, onto your property, that you're an irresponsible cat owner?

  • 23

Don't pay for the vet bill, and next time you catch Theo in your yard, drop him off at an animal shelter and let her find him on her own. You've given this woman an ocean of unnecessary leniency and all she's doing is threatening you with it.

  • 24

Comfortable-Bug1737 23h ago Your cat is in your garden. The neighbours should keep their cats in theirs or in their homes, if they are that concerned

  • 25

Commercial_You2541 22h ago Your cat is in their own yard. If they have a problem with your cat harming theirs, who can't climb or do anything outside of youe yard, then they should keep their cats in their homes. These people are absolute morons.

  • 26

Titariia 22h ago . If Lisa doesn't want Theo to get hurt she shouldn't let him out. Chances are he got al Icked by a dog or something and now she blames you. Ask your neighbors how your disabled cat can a Ick a young and healthy cat to this extend and publicly ask her and anyone of definite proof that your cat is aggressiv.

  • 27

Lilith504 23h ago Just get cameras and post her lies

FinancialCamel7281 22h ago NTA why would you listen to your dad, pay nothing without a medical report, from the vet. Let your cat out in the garden stop letting your bu y neighbour dictate your life. Next time respond to your neighbour on the group forum

  • 30

EffectivePangolin104 22h ago . If cat owners let their cats outside then they have to realise that issues can arise. It can be with other cats, dogs, cars etc. If she is so worried, she should have never let her cat outside in the first place. Personally, I think all cats should be indoor cats as they harm the wildlife so much. But here in the UK, most cats roam wherever they want.

  • 31

Itacira 22h ago If she's slandering you on social media, I'd reply publicly that you have spoken to her and offered to pay for the vet bill once you get proof of treatment, which she has refused to provide.

  • 32

I'd also knock on the other neighbors' doors and explain de situation (something like "Hi, I'm so sorry to bother you, do you have some time? I'm very worried about this situation with Lisa. [Here's what happened]. I really don't want any trouble. Have you ever had any problems with Marin before?"

  • 33

Good luck with the situation, Lisa sounds nasty (you actually could shame her for not being an "animal lover", if you want to play her game).
