Bill Belichick was hired by UNC to turn their program around. While they've not been bad for a while, they haven't made much real progress as a program. They have some good years, but they're mostly just fine. The Tar Heels weren't content with that.
And with the new CFB landscape, they needed a coach that not only could draw up Xs and Os and coach a team, but someone who could attract talent in the age of NIL and the transfer portal. They needed their Deion Sanders, so to speak. Even if Belichick can't turn them into a perennial power, he's at least revitalized the fan base.
UNC sold out tickets for Bill Belichick's first year
According to Pete Thamel, tickets for UNC's football schedule have already sold out. He reported that they've sold their "entire allotment" of tickets, so it will be incredibly difficult for anyone to get into a UNC football game this year. That's the sort of thing that's been true of Ohio State, Alabama, and others, but not the Heels.
It remains to be seen if Belichick can transfer his coaching prowess to the college game. It remains to be seen if he can work well with a roster that's devoid of superstar talent right now and heavily dependent on the transfer portal. It does not remain to be seen if there's interest, though, as fans everywhere clearly want to watch the show.
