As the San Francisco 49ers prepare for their Week 9 contest against the New York Giants, there are some fresh rumors to share on Sunday morning.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the 49ers "remain interested in adding a front-seven player," which, of course, may include defensive line (interior and edge rusher) and linebacker.
The Niners could use more depth on the inside, but the needs at linebacker and edge rusher are more dire.
After all, San Francisco lost Nick Bosa and Fred Warner for the season and Bryce Huff is dealing with a hamstring injury that further hurts a 49ers defense that has tallied the second-fewest sacks in the NFL.
San Francisco did add Keion White in a trade with the New England Patriots, but he is hardly guaranteed to make an impact after tallying zero sacks this season.
When it comes to wide receiver Jauan Jennings, Rapoport notes that the veteran wide receiver is unlikely to be traded, but moving him "isn't off the table," either.
"A trade of Jennings isn't off the table, but with Brandon Aiyuk still coming back from last year's season-ending knee injury, it's not considered likely. Teams will continue to call, though," Rapoport reported.
Jennings, who is in the final year of his contract, reportedly told the Niners during the offseason that he wanted to be extended or traded. Neither scenario came to fruition and instead Jennings was given a slight bump in pay.
Adding more fuel to trade rumors and speculation, Jennings deleted his Instagram page, although it remains unclear if that stems from his frustration with the team.
In the wake of that social media move, head coach Kyle Shanahan said he would be surprised if Jennings gets traded.
"I would be very surprised if Jauan wasn't on our team throughout this year," Shanahan said last week.
The fact of the matter is, the Niners simply can't afford to trade Jennings.
We still have no clue when Brandon Aiyuk will be back and Ricky Pearsall has missed five games in a row if you include Week 9.
We would expect Jennings to stick around for the rest of this season. Meanwhile, look for general manager John Lynch to make at least one more addition for the defense.
