'I never thought it would happen to me': After helping rehome cats for years, a thin stray shows up on a rough day and ends up being the one this rescuer adopts

Oh boy. I never thought it would happen to me, but here I am! To preface, I've helped rehome at least 5 other cats, but this one was/is different.

Two days ago I was in a funk. It was a beautiful day outside, but nothing was working. My back was killing me, my husband had accidentally put my emotional support headphones through the washing machine, and just everything felt off.

But because it was such a nice day outside, I forced myself to sit out on the deck and eat my lunch in the sunshine. So I sat down, looked up, and there he was. Just sitting near the swing set across our yard. Watching me, clearly not scared, but just observing.

He walked past, keeping an eye on me. God he was so thin. I figured that'd be the last I saw of him and said a little prayer to keep him safe. Then my son got up and we went out for the afternoon, not giving much thought to the little cat who was studying me.

When we came home a few hours later, we were playing outside, and there he was! On our deck! And thrilled to see me. Almost like "OH thank God! The nice lady DOES live here!" I fed him a can (we have

two other cats) and he scarfed the whole thing down. He had a pretty nasty cold, and was sneezing a lot, but I put out a blanket and some food for him overnight.

And he stayed. The whole night. By the morning, the temps were dropping and it had started to rain, so I brought him into the garage (don't want my other two boys contracting a URI!) And called the vet to set up an appointment.

He is the most loving, affectionate, happy guy I have ever had. I've honestly never had a cat this affectionate right from the jump. I think he must be 6-10 months old, still rail thin, and is still pretty banged up, but he's recovering quickly.

His vet appointment is in 5 days. I named him Mr. Bingley after the golden retriever man in Pride and Prejudice.

Reinvented Nightly Once you let them in the garage, it's over home, Mr. Bingley! Welcome

  • Once they make their way inside, it’s over. There’s no going back after that. One step through the door and they’re not just visiting anymore, they’re yours. It happens fast too. One minute it’s helping a cat, the next it’s setting up space and making room like they’ve always been part of it. They settle in, get comfortable, and somehow everything just shifts around them.

Foreign-Meeting313 Such grand whiskers! Good cat karma for you!

  • Those long whiskers really stand out. Sticking out in every direction, making his whole face look even bigger. They kind of give him that slightly scruffy, still-getting-put-together look, but it works. Adds a lot of character. Hard not to notice them right away.

Electrical-Act-7170 Aww, he knows that you saved him. Him lubs U!

  • He looks like he figured it out right away. Like the second he got inside he knew this was home. No pacing, no hesitation, just settling in and getting comfortable like he has been there the whole time. That kind of calm doesn’t happen by accident. He looks safe, fed, and completely at ease. After being out there, you can tell he knows he made it somewhere good and he is not going anywhere now.
