Howie Roseman explains why Eagles kept A.J. Brown at trade deadline

The NFL trade deadline has come and gone, and one notable name did not move — A.J. Brown.

There had been plenty of chatter and buzz surrounding the wideout’s name this year and if he would eventually get shipped out from Philadelphia.

Ultimately, Brown is staying with the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles, and on Tuesday afternoon, general manager Howie Roseman explained the organization’s thinking when asked if he had entertained any potential deals.

“I think that when you’re trying to be a great team, it’s hard to trade great players, and A.J. Brown’s a great player,” Roseman said. “He wears the ‘C’ [on his jersey] for a reason. He’s an important part of this team, of this organization. He cares about winning, he cares about his teammates, and I think that when you’re a team like ours that is looking forward to an opportunity to compete for a championship, you just don’t get rid of guys like that.”

Through seven games this year, Brown has 395 receiving yards on just 29 catches, hauling in three touchdowns. He did have his biggest game of the year in Week 7 — his last game played as he’s been nursing a hamstring injury — when he recorded a season-best 121 yards and two touchdowns.

There have been plenty of questions about Brown and whether or not he wanted to remain in Philly. That came to a head after he shared a Bible verse, Mark 6:11, on his X account after a Week 4 win — when he had just two catches — that read: “If you’re not welcomed, not listened to, quietly withdraw. Don’t make a scene. Shrug your shoulders and be on your way.”

He later explained that he had let “frustrations” get the best of him.

Brown then denied that he, running back Saquon Barkley and quarterback Jalen Hurts had a meeting about the team’s up-and-down offense days after the Eagles lost to the Giants in early October. He later took to social media to clarify what he meant.

“Just to clear this up,” he wrote on X. “That wasn’t a meeting or a sit-down. I said ‘I don’t recall’ because it got painted like there was tension and [Barkley] had to step in. That’s not true.

“I was walking to my car, saw them, and stopped to talk. Nothing more.”

Either way, Brown will be in Philadelphia (6-2) the rest of the year, and Roseman seems happy about.

“We feel very lucky to have him on our team and excited about the second half of the season with him,” Roseman added.
