The Chicago White Sox won Game 1 of the ALDS over the Cleveland Guardians by a 3-0 score, and it featured an incredible performance from Grant Taylor.
He went four innings to close out the game for the White Sox, getting a very rare four-inning save. But his performance was significantly more noteworthy than a typical four-inning save.
Jayson Stark of The Athletic shared that this performance from Taylor was just the third time that a pitcher had a four-plus-inning save in MLB postseason history, joining two MLB postseason legends in the process.
Grant Taylor's four-inning save joins two legends in MLB postseason history
"This was only the third save of four-plus innings in a game that close in modern postseason history (since 1969). Here are the others: Madison Bumgarner (5 IP) -- Game 7, 2014 World Series. Vida Blue (4 IP) -- Game 5, 1972 ALCS," Stark writes.
Taylor's incredible performance in Game 1 of the ALDS against the Guardians was just the third time a pitcher has gotten a four-plus-inning save in the postseason when the game was within three runs.
There have been other instances of a pitcher getting a four-inning save when the team was up big, but this is only the third time since 1969 that a pitcher has closed out a game in an actual save situation.

Taylor's final line was 4.0 innings, allowing two hits, no walks, no runs, and six strikeouts. This would be an incredible performance regardless of circumstances, but with this being a playoff game, it's all the more impressive.
The White Sox have a 1-0 series lead thanks in part to Munetaka Murakami's two-run homer and Taylor's dominant four-inning save that made some MLB history.
There have been some incredible performances in the 2026 MLB playoffs so far, and this four-inning save for Taylor might be one of the best.
