Shedeur Sanders will start at quarterback for the Browns in their preseason opener Friday night against the Panthers.
Sanders, a fifth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Colorado, didn't take many first-team reps during Training Camp. But he has emerged as the last man standing in one of the league's most bizarre quarterback competitions.
Dillon Gabriel — a third-round pick in the draft, ahead of Sanders — and Kenny Pickett are nursing hamstring injuries, sidelining them through the opener. Veteran Joe Flacco, listed as the starter on the team's first official depth chart, won't play Friday. That hands the baton to Sanders, who found himself as the No. 4 quarterback on the initial depth chart.
It's a golden opportunity for Sanders, who won the prestigious Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award as a senior in his final college season. He'll face a Panthers team hungry for success after yet another underwhelming 2024 campaign.
