The Santa Anita Derby, an American Grade 1 thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds, serves as one of the biggest prep races for the famed Kentucky Derby. As it does every April, the Santa Anita will run this weekend in Arcadia, California, featuring a 1-and-1/8 mile dirt course and a $750,000 purse.

One of the final precursors to the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby, the 2025 Santa Anita Derby will feature five horses. And if history has taught us anything, it's that the Golden State often produces Kentucky Derby favorites. 

Legendary Triple Crown-winning trainer Bob Baffert has played a big part in that fact, and he has two horses competing in this weekend's race: Citizen Bull (9-5) and Barnes (3-1).

The other three horses are Journalism (6-5), Westwood (20-1) and Baeza (6-1). Journalism, one of the fastest horses in the world right now, is one of the top contenders for the Kentucky Derby.
