How Red Sox trade deadline moves have resulted in a net-negative impact

The Boston Red Sox made a lot of moves ahead of the 2026 MLB trade deadline, including adding Erik Miller, Adley Rutschman, Curtis Mead, and moving on from Marcelo Mayer and some top prospects.

One month later, now that their deadline moves have gotten a chance to prove themselves with their new team, how have the Red Sox trade deadline moves panned out?

Bradford Doolittle of ESPN highlighted how the Red Sox have gotten net-negative value from their deadline additions. How this happened is very simple: Rutschman is banged up and not playing well, and Mead is still on the injured list.

Why Red Sox had a net-negative MLB trade deadline

"Pickup impact: -4.2," Doolittle writes. "... Only five teams have given up more post-deadline runs. Surprising addition Erik Miller has been dynamite as a bullpen lefty, so the negative impact isn't on him. But Curtis Mead was injured in his first game for Boston, and Adley Rutschman hasn't hit."

Mead was acquired from the Washington Nationals for Connelly Early this season, and he appeared in one game. He had two plate appearances before landing on the IL. He's been out since July 27, though he has 0.1 bWAR for Boston so far.

Rutschman, meanwhile, picked up from the Baltimore Orioles in a major blockbuster deal that sent a ton of valuable prospects to a division rival, has not been good for the Red Sox.

He has played in 15 games and had 59 plate appearances, but has contributed -0.2 bWAR with a .170 batting average and a .500 OPS this season.

While Miller has posted 0.4 bWAR for the Red Sox since being acquired from the San Francisco Giants, the poor production from Rutschman and the missed time from Mead have resulted in a net-negative impact from their mid-season trade additions.

There's still time for the Red Sox to get better production from their pickups, especially if Mead returns from injury and Rutschman can start hitting well.

But for now, the Red Sox have gotten negative value from their trade additions one month after the MLB trade deadline.
