Munetaka Murakami has been a known entity for a while.
He hit one of the most epic home runs in the 2023 World Baseball Classic as a rising star for Samurai Japan, for example. Still, him coming to MLB is different. It's a chance to prove himself despite having a lot of doubters at the moment.
The Chicago White Sox ended up with Murakami, in large part because no one would meet his contract demands. He settled for a one-year deal with Chicago.
There are concerns about Murakami's swing-and-miss. There are those who simply wonder if his prodigious power will translate to MLB.
But the truth is, there's some risk for the rest of the league letting the White Sox end up with Murakami. If he's legitimate, he could make Chicago a pretty good baseball team.

It'd certainly be quite a difference from recent years for the White Sox, but there's reason to believe in them this season, and an emerging Murakami would be a strong thing working in their favor.
"Murakami is the biggest impact addition made by the White Sox during this current rebuild and the most accomplished player from the Pacific Rim to ever join the franchise," MLB.com's Scott Merkin wrote in a new article on Wednesday. "But there’s still a question as to how his skills will translate when coming to Major League Baseball. He not only has to adjust to a new league but a new country. The White Sox are helping forge a smooth transition, and Murakami is a tireless worker with a very regimented routine. If he takes off offensively, the White Sox could follow as a team."
Spring Training can only teach onlookers so much. The reality is that Murakami will get into the season and have to prove he belongs.
If he does, it'll be a big boon to the White Sox. If he struggles, though, it'll be a bummer for baseball fans across the world.
