How much money can Man United spend? Predicted summer transfer budget after missing out on Champions League

5 hours ago 1

In the wake of a disastrous season on nearly all accounts, Manchester United face a defining summer as they look to completely reshape their roster and push towards a return to prominence.

The Red Devils sit a woeful 16th in the Premier League standings ahead of the final matchday of the campaign, locked in for weeks to a worst-ever finish for the club.

The expectation is that head coach Ruben Amorim will stay on as head coach and get a full preseason to instill his tactical philosophy, so the time is now for him to make his mark on the squad in the summer transfer window.

So after missing out on a massive influx of prize money by falling short in Europe, the amount will Manchester United have to spend in the coming market will be of paramount importance as they chase individuals who could spark a return to more significant domestic and European standing.

How much money did Man United miss out on with Europa League loss?

Manchester United missed out on two separate financial windfalls with their 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in the 2025 Europa League final.

First, they fell short of the €5.9 million ($6.7m) prize given to the title winner, but that's only the tip of the iceberg on what they failed to secure.

The big potential gain was the qualification to the Champions League, which comes with a much larger pot. A guaranteed prize of €18.6 million ($21m) just for being involved in the league phase. They would then have the chance to earn an additional €2.1 million for each league phase win and €700,000 for a draw, plus additional gains from any potential knockout game reached.

How much money can Man United spend?

It's hard to know exactly how much money a particular club has to spend, and likely it varies on what potential deals come to fruition, but there are some reports available with a few potential numbers.

According to Jonathan Wilson of The Guardian, Man United have around £100 million (€119m / $134.2) to spend this summer without sales needed, as a chase for attacking improvements like Matheus Cunha and Liam Delap will reportedly not require any corresponding outgoing moves.

That figure is slightly reduced to £80 million (€94.8m / $107.4m) according to Gabriele Marcotti and Mark Ogden of ESPN FC, noting that figure is down from £130 million that could have been available had they won the Europa League final.

The ESPN report claims that £12-15 million in wages will come off the books this summer — more if they make a few more sales — and there are few contract extensions needed in the near future.

Will Man United sell players to raise funds?

While the club does not necessarily need to sell players on the roster to raise transfer funds, as stated by the Guardian's report referenced earlier, it also doesn't prevent them from making moves if they feel further upgrades are required.

The same report claimed that United would be open to offers for Alejandro Garnacho, who expressed frustration after being benched for the Europa League final.

They also must sort out the futures of four players who were sent out on loan but return to Old Trafford with the conclusion of the season. Marcus Rashford, Antony, Tyrell Malacia, and Jadon Sancho all enjoyed varying levels of success at other clubs through the second half of the season.

A report by the Manchester Evening News says that all four will be shopped in the market, while struggling striker Rasmus Hojlund could also be offloaded, despite spending €78 million on the 22-year-old's signature just two years prior.
