The NHL’s defending Stanley Cup champions are on the defensive.
One year after winning it all, the Florida Panthers kick off the NHL’s Eastern Conference Finals at the Carolina Hurricanes‘ Lenovo Center in Raleigh, NC on Tuesday, May 20.
They enter the cutthroat series at a bit of a disadvantage. Prior to the ECF, Matthew Tkachuk and the Panthers slugged it out with the Toronto Maple Leafs in a nail-biter seven game Semifinals. Meanwhile, Sebastian Aho and the ‘Canes have been resting since their game five win against the Capitals on May 15.
Being saddled as the underdog is familiar territory for the Panthers, though. Last season, the club took down Presidents’ Trophy winners New York Rangers in the ECF before coming away victorious in a shocking seven-game series against the Edmonton Oilers to claim the crown.
Will they prevail again this year? Or are they gassed? Can the Hurricanes advance to the Stanley Cup for the first time since 2006?
