How Matt Chapman trade fits Yankees

The New York Yankees traded for a third baseman last summer, except it was Ryan McMahon, and that hasn't worked out.

Don't be surprised if the Yanks go after another third baseman this summer -- potentially a guy like San Francisco Giants star Matt Chapman.

The Yankees were named by MLB.com's Mark Feinsand as one of three logical fits for Chapman, along with the Philadelphia Phillies and St. Louis Cardinals.

The Yanks make as much sense as any team to go out and get Chapman.

How a Matt Chapman trade fits the Yankees

The Yankees' biggest offensive weakness in recent years has been third base. They just haven't figured out how to get a productive bat at the hot corner.

They've taken different approaches, but they haven't worked.

At this point, it probably makes sense to try out a guy like Chapman. He gets the job done both in the field and at the plate.

"The Giants are in full-on sell mode, prepared to take offers on their high-priced players, including Chapman, Willy Adames and Rafael Devers," Feinsand writes. "Chapman, who is owed $100 million over the next four years, is the most likely of the trio to be moved, as he remains an above-average glove at third base while also producing offensively (7 HR, 41 RBIs, .737 OPS in 73 games)."

Money isn't really an object for the Yankees. The reality is that they need to be better at third base to raise their chances of winning the World Series. Chapman would accomplish that goal.
