How long is Tyrese Maxey out? 76ers star set to miss rest of season with finger injury

21 hours ago 1

Bad injury luck has been toward the top of the many things that have gone wrong for the 76ers in the 2024-25 season.

From the start of the season, Joel Embiid was dealing with knee issues that ultimately held him to just 19 games. New Philadelphia star Paul George only managed 41 games played, dealing with ailments in his left adductor muscle and knee. Even Tyrese Maxey, the team's 24-year-old star guard, struggled to stay on the court.

Maxey had been one of the most durable players in the NBA over his first four seasons, but began dealing with a finger injury late in the regular season, which is nearly over. As Philadelphia has long shifted its focus to the 2025 Draft Lottery, Maxey's status has been up in the air.

Even with Philadelphia struggling to compete in the Eastern Conference, Maxey had been on the floor for the majority of the first half of the 2024-25 schedule. But he began dealing with a finger tendon injury on March 3.

ESPN's Shams Charania reported Thursday that Maxey "attempted to rehab the finger," but as he's still dealing with discomfort with the regular season winding down, he needs more treatment.

In Philadelphia's March 3 matchup against Portland, Maxey was also slow to get up after falling to the floor on a drive to the basket.

Maxey, who was a first-time All-Star in 2023-24, has ranked among the league leaders in points per game this season, but has struggled to lift the 76ers on his own with Embiid and George often sidelined. Since his last game on March 3, Philadelphia has gone 2-14, including a current nine-game losing streak.

The 76ers, who would owe the Thunder their 2025 first-round pick if it falls outside the top-6, have played their young talent-heavy minutes in recent weeks, free-falling in the standings. They currently own the fifth-worst winning percentage in the NBA, according to Tankathon, trending toward keeping their own first-round pick.

Charania reported Thursday that Maxey has been ruled out for the rest of the 2024-25 season. Philadelphia only has six games remaining, as it was eliminated from postseason contention a while back.

Maxey will head into the offseason managing his finger tendon injury. Given that the 2025-26 season won't begin until October, he's likely to return to full health next season as the 76ers seek to bounce back after a rough year.
