Where is the Indy 500 race track?

  • Track: Indianapolis Motor Speedway
  • Location: Speedway, Indiana

Each year, the Indy 500 takes place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Ind.

Carl Fisher, James Allison, Arthur Newby, and Frank Wheeler purchased the plot of land in western Indianapolis to build their track. Fisher had originally wanted the track to be five miles long, according to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's website. After some drafts that included a three-mile oval with a two-mile road course, which was shut down after New York civil engineer P.T. Andrews found grandstands wouldn't fit with a track that large, the 2.5-mile track began construction.

The city got its name after its focal point in the Indianapolis race track, according to the city's website. While the track was built in 1909, the city itself was not fully established until 1926.

Two years after the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was built, it hosted its first Indy 500 in 1911 and quickly became known as the place “Where America Learned to Race.”
