It's hard to imagine a tougher week for the Los Angeles Rams. After a brutal loss to their divisional rivals, the San Francisco 49ers, in Australia, news broke that star trade acquisition Myles Garrett would undergo arthroscopic knee surgery that would require four weeks out of gridiron action at a minimum.

Garrett was unable to practice during much of Los Angeles' offseason after he cited that his knee was not 100%. He didn't register a single tackle during the season opener, and he didn't seem like his normal dominant self.

Here's the latest on how long the Rams' new defensive star will be sidelined after undergoing knee surgery.

How long is Myles Garrett out?

According to Tom Pelissero, Garrett is heading to the injured reserve (IR) after requiring arthroscopic knee surgery. This means he'll miss a minimum of four games. Garrett could return to action in Week 6, when his team hosts the Arizona Cardinals at SoFi Stadium.

Fans will have to wait to see Aaron Donald and Myles Garrett on the same defensive line. Donald, however, could return for next week's Monday night matchup against the New York Giants.

"I've got to be better," Garrett said, according to ESPN. "I've got to find a way to recover and get back to the player I know I can be and I've shown that I've been before."

What happened to Myles Garrett

After being held to zero tackles in the Rams' 27-7 opening loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Garrett said his form was "the worst version of myself that I've put out there," per ESPN. The defensive star battled through an offseason knee injury that kept him out of a portion of Los Angeles' training camp.

"When I was out there, I was a little bit more focused on myself and trying to stay healthy than what they were doing, and that showed," Garrett said, according to ESPN. "I wasn't who I needed to be for my team."

Garrett previously told Coach McVay that he was "feeling about 85%" healthy. Garrett sat out for the joint practice with the Dallas Cowboys on August 11 due to swelling in his knee, and he was left out of the gridiron action during the Rams' preseason matchup at Kansas City, per DraftSharks.

He returned to practice just before Los Angeles traveled down to Australia for their season opener, but it was evident Garrett was far from his dominant self.

According to Cleveland Clinic, arthroscopic knee surgery involves a surgeon making small cuts to look at certain aspects in an individual's knee. They then use a small light and small video camera, also known as an arthroscope, to look inside a person's knee joint. The images are projected onto a small screen, where the doctor decides how severe an injury is and what needs to come next in the recovery process.

At the moment, it's unclear how severe or what specifically Garrett's injury is. More news is expected to follow, but it's far from what Los Angeles needed after a tough Week 1.

According to Pelissero, since Garrett was put on the IR, he is required to miss a minimum of four games. He won't be on the field for the team's future matchups against the Giants, Browns, Eagles, or Bills for Weeks 2 through 5.
