When NBA scouts discuss the next generation of elite scoring point guards, comparisons between Trae Young and Darius Acuff Jr. continue to surface. While Acuff is still developing at the college level, his offensive creativity and scoring instincts have reminded evaluators of Young’s rise from Oklahoma superstar to NBA All-Star.
Young entered the NBA as one of the most explosive offensive guards in college basketball history. During his lone season at Oklahoma, he averaged 27.4 points and 8.7 assists per game while leading the nation in both categories. His deep shooting range, passing vision and confidence immediately made him one of basketball’s most recognizable young stars.
Acuff has not reached that level yet, but his freshman season at Arkansas has strengthened comparisons between the two guards. Acuff averaged 23.5 points, 6.4 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game while shooting nearly 48 percent from the field during the 2025-26 season. He also led the SEC in both scoring and assists, becoming the first player since Pete Maravich to accomplish the feat.

Both players thrive with the ball in their hands and excel in pick-and-roll situations. Like Young, Acuff is capable of creating offense from anywhere on the floor and consistently pressures defenses with deep shooting ability and quick change-of-pace dribbling. Analyst love Acuff’s basketball IQ and advanced shot-making ability coming out of IMG Academy.
There are differences, however. Young entered the NBA with elite passing instincts and unlimited shooting range but faced concerns about his size and defense. Acuff, listed at 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds, has a stronger frame and projects as a more physical defender at the next level.
Acuff may not be the exact replica of Young, but his production, confidence and offensive versatility have convinced many scouts he could become the next dynamic scoring guard to make a major NBA impact.
