How Christian Braun's contract possibly doomed the Denver Nuggets' long-term future

After a lengthy free agency saga, Peyton Watson is off to the Cleveland Cavaliers. This is yet another chapter in the Denver Nuggets' struggles with their contract situation because it seems they did not offer Watson the deal he wanted.

Many people have pointed out Christian Braun's contract with the Nuggets and how it has handicapped the front office in negotiations. Watson wanted a similar contract to his now-former teammate, but it seems the Nuggets could not afford to do so.

Christian Braun's contract might be an issue for the Nuggets

Back in October 2025, the Nuggets agreed to a five-year contract worth $125 million with Braun. Since he was a solid player for the Nuggets, it was an understandable decision. However, the amount might have been too big even for a rock-solid contributor.

After an underwhelming 2025-26 season, Braun's contract did not look good for Denver. Since Watson stood out in the 2025-26 campaign, he felt he deserved an improved contract. Unfortunately, the Nuggets did not feel the same.

Of course, Braun is under pressure to perform to the standard of his contract. It will be challenging to do so, but he has the tools to be a solid player again, especially since he plays with Nikola Jokic on the same team, who can set him up well.

Unfortunately for Braun, he has been the player most criticized for the Nuggets' struggles. His contract is not a good look so far, and it will run for four more years after the 2025-26 season.

Moving forward, the Nuggets could find improvements, but they will struggle with their roster construction unless they make some bold decisions. If they an find a way to get out of their struggles, the Nuggets can regain their championship contender status.
