The Milwaukee Brewers have made the 2026 MLB World Series, beating the Los Angeles Dodgers in a four-game sweep in the NLCS. The Tampa Bay Rays, after winning in six games in the ALCS over the Cleveland Guardians, are their opponent.

This is a fun matchup for neutral fans, but especially for Brewers and Rays fans. The reason why? Neither team has won a World Series before. This season, there will be a first-time World Series-winning club. That's a very cool feat on the horizon.

ESPN's David Schoenfield revealed that this fun World Series matchup is actually making MLB history that hasn't been seen since 1980. How? Well, that World Series 46 years ago was the last time two teams faced off that had never won a title before.

Brewers and Rays make World Series history not seen in 46 years

"The Brewers are in their 57th season in Milwaukee. The Rays are in their 29th season in Tampa Bay. Neither franchise has won a World Series," Schoenfield writes. "The last time this kind of World Series matchup was in 1980, when the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Kansas City Royals."

Just like the Philadelphia Phillies and Kansas City Royals 46 years ago, the 2026 Brewers and Rays will guarantee that a franchise that has never won a World Series title will get their first this season.

While there's been some really fun matchups over the years, including back in 2016 when Cleveland and the Chicago Cubs faced off, this is the first time in quite a while that both teams hadn't ever won a World Series before.

There's been longer droughts in MLB history, with the Cubs and Cleveland Guardians having a ridiculous 174 combined seasons without a title.

This year's matchup "comes as the seventh-longest combined drought World Series," according to Schoenfield, with their 85 combined seasons without a title two seasons behind the Phillies and Royals back in 1980.

While these are two newer franchises in the grand scheme of MLB history, they both have never won a title before, which guarantees one fanbase will celebrate a title for the first time since the franchise was created.

That alone is reason enough to tune in, but with both of these teams being No. 1 seeds in the AL and NL, this is the kind of matchup that could be an all-time incredible World Series. The Brewers vs. Rays World Series begins Friday, and it should be a great one.
