Emmys 2025: You'll Thank Reba McEntire and Little Big Town for This Golden Girls Tribute
Owen Cooper is celebrating a historic win at the 2025 Emmys.
The 15-year-old became the youngest performer to receive the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, and the youngest-ever male Emmy winner, after being recognized for his gut-wrenching performance in the Netflix crime drama Adolescence. And while the accolade puts him in rarefied territory, Owen isn’t the youngest person overall to be recognized by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. That title belongs to Roxana Zal, who was only 14 when she won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie in 1984 for Something About Amelia.
Despite his young age, Owen delivered a powerful message during his acceptance speech that’s sure to resonate with all audiences.
“When I started these drama classes a couple years back, I didn't expect to be even in the United States, never mind here,” the British-born actor said onstage at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles Sept. 14. “Tonight proves that if you listen and you focus and you step out your comfort zone, you can achieve anything in life… Who cares if you get embarrassed? Anything can be possible.”
Owen’s performance as a suburban teen accused of murder drew critical acclaim, as did the show’s co-creator and writer Stephen Graham, who plays the boy’s father in the four-part series. The 52-year-old previously said he found inspiration for the plot from local true crime stories, which sparked his curiosity about the challenges of raising kids in the era of social media.

“We could have made a drama about gangs and knife crime, or about a kid whose mother is an alcoholic or whose father is a violent abuser,” he told Netflix’s website Tudum in March. “Instead, we wanted you to look at this family and think, ‘My God. This could be happening to us!’ And what’s happening here is an ordinary family’s worst nightmare.”
