The Charlotte Hornets suffered another narrow loss Tuesday night, but the defeat once again highlighted the steady emergence of their rookie class. Kon Knueppel and Ryan Kalkbrenner delivered standout performances in the loss, continuing a trend of strong early-season development for Charlotte’s young players.
Knueppel, a former Duke standout, recorded the first double-double of his career, finishing with 20 points and 12 rebounds. His physicality on the boards and improved offensive confidence kept Charlotte within striking distance for much of the night.
Kalkbrenner’s rise, however, has quickly become one of the Hornets’ most compelling storylines. The second-round pick posted the second double-double of his young career on Tuesday, totaling 10 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, one steal and four blocks. He converted all four of his shot attempts and hit both free throws, adding to what has been a remarkably efficient start.
Veteran forward Miles Bridges praised the rookie’s impact during a halftime interview. “Defense, offense, he’s great,” Bridges said. “I love Ryan, and he’s gonna help us get this win tonight.”
While the win ultimately slipped away, Kalkbrenner’s consistency continues to impress. It is uncommon for a second-round pick to enter the rotation so quickly, let alone earn and keep a spot in the starting lineup. Through the opening stretch of the season, he has posted early career highs of 17 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.
Kalkbrenner currently leads the NBA in field-goal percentage at 82.9 percent, more than 10 percentage points ahead of Rudy Gobert who ranks second. He also ranks second in blocks leaguewide, trailing only Victor Wembanyama. His four blocks Tuesday marked his third straight game with at least four.
The Hornets will return to Miami on Friday for a rematch against the Heat, who previously defeated Charlotte by 27 points earlier in the season.
