Hornets’ frontcourt questions ease as Kalkbrenner impresses

The Charlotte Hornets picked up their first preseason win Thursday night, defeating the Dallas Mavericks 120-116. Charlotte had six players score in double figures — all five starters and rookie guard Kon Kneuppel, the No. 4 overall pick.

Second-round draft choice Ryan Kalkbrenner also turned in an impressive performance, making his first preseason start and posting a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The 7-footer from Creighton didn’t miss a shot, finishing a perfect 7-for-7 from the field while adding a block. His plus-minus rating was second-best on the team, trailing only LaMelo Ball.

Charlotte entered the offseason facing questions about its frontcourt depth after trading away centers Jusuf Nurkic and Mark Williams. The Hornets reunited with veteran Mason Plumlee to provide experience, but the starting role at center remains open. Moussa Diabate, who appeared in 71 games last season but has just nine career starts, is expected to begin the season as the starter.

Kalkbrenner, 23, is projected to play key minutes off the bench as he adjusts to the NBA level. The Hornets view him as a long-term developmental piece who could earn an expanded role if he continues his efficient play.

A five-year college veteran, Kalkbrenner used an extra year of eligibility granted during the COVID-19 pandemic to polish his game at Creighton. In his final season, he averaged 19.2 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game, emerging as one of the nation’s most consistent big men.

Whether his steady preseason form carries into the regular season could determine how comfortable the Hornets feel with their current frontcourt depth.
