Kro 920 Colors NO SMOKING RICHFAMILY If she was in public school, she would probably be learning how to multiply fractions. + 8,807 Krog Since she is homeschooled, she learns actual life skills every single day. 1,623 TimeRichFamily I can honestly report that I haven't had 387 946

Hannah Ward Mom (x3) | L... @HannahWardEdu There are three kinds of homeschoolers. Two kinds are fine. One kind is a problem. 1. Weirdo super academic homeschoolers <--- us, weird, fine (small percentage of homeschoolers) 2. Nice normal people who are homeschooling with a plan at a mostly typical academic pace that honors where their child is at <--- very nice, love this (most homeschoolers) I I I 3. People that aren't really homeschooling and say that they're homeschooling. They're just hanging

I definitely knew some kids in the third group growing up. At first, I was kind of jealous that they got to stay home and basically do no work, barely going to online school that didn't require anything of them, but I knew from my dog days of summer that I would not thrive in a lifestyle that allowed me to lie around all day at home during the daytime. Whether you like it or not, humans are made to work! We're made to wake up in the morning and do something productive during the day, whether that's learning, volunteering, or working at a traditional job, and if you rob your kids of the experience of learning to get up every day and do something.

rue @Ruesavatar When I was homeschooled we also had to do math...

Annoyed Canuck ❤ @annoyedcanuck1 To be fair this life skill is helpful if you want to work in new jersey

Allie + @allie_voss What drives me nuts about this brand of homeschooler is the implication that you can't do both fractions and life skills Public schools seem to underestimate kids in one way, but some homeschooler families underestimate them in another

I would say learning to multiply fractions and pump gas can both be taught quickly enough to free up time for so much more learning. You can learn an infinite number of things if you can move on from the basics!

Kelsey Piper ❤ @KelseyTuoc Also the implication that multiplying fractions is obviously some ridiculous waste of time it's good for kids to avoid, instead of 5th grade math they'll need if they ever want to pursue a huge range of life skills!

Rodney Adams @rodrepairs Especially when the "life skill" like pumping gas can be learned in 30 seconds doing it one time. I know exceptional homeschool families, and I also know some for which it is a form of rebellion against any form of accountability or societal standards

Wade @DickWade11 Drives me nuts that people think fractions and math are never used in life after school. Type of idiots who aren't sure there are 4 quarters in a dollar. Type of person to ask me what the eighth inch means on a tape measure, its 1/8 of an inch I dont know how else to explain it

sophia of hangover @aethelfleds The amount of math I simply did not learn due to unschooling is crazy and yeah, it does affect other aspects of your adult life!

Even if you don't use math at your job, having a fundamental understanding of addition, subtraction, fractions, and division is totally necessary for functioning in society. If you had a good math education in elementary school, those skills are probably second nature to you, so it doesn't feel like you learned much. If you didn't have that foundational math education, you can really clearly tell how much you're missing.

Caitlin Francis @MrsCMFrancis Yea so she needs to be learning both. Math is not just about "when am I gonna use this in real life". It teaches you how to think, how to reason. You need to be doing both

I feel this way about all school subjects. Far too many people focus too much on the practicality of learning. They think that any class is not worth taking if it doesn't directly contribute to how much money you're going to make down the road. They don't think knowledge is work you do just to acquire it, and that's not true. Learning as much as you possibly can will make learning the "real-life" skills easier. It will make you more resilient when you face real-life challenges. A K-12 education shouldn't just be a completion grade for showing up. It should teach kids that learning is valuable, even when it's not for practical purposes.

Jack Peach | Dynastic Dating → @ThinkInPeach My wife and I were going to homeschool our kids. Until we moved into a community where half the kids are homeschooled, the other half at a public school. Yeah, my kids are going to school lol.

VB VB Knives ❤ @Empty_America I'm going to be honest, I'm not sure that I have ever once multiplied fractions since leaving school. You sometimes add or subtract them, and sometimes multiply and divide by whole numbers like 2, but actually multiplying fractions? Drawing a blank.

Ryan Moulton @moultano If you're cutting a recipe in half, and the recipe has 3/4ths of a cup of flour, you multiply 1/2 by 3/4ths to compute how much flour.

Mrs Odd Duck @MrsOddDuck In my opinion, teaching life skills isn't homeschooling, it's just parenting. You have to teach your kids life skills whether they are in public school or homeschooled. This person isn't homeschooling their child if they aren't actively educating on at least the core subjects.

Moley @TheMoleyHeart My driving instructor made sure we stopped for petrol on one of my later lessons so that I'd done it at least once. When I was doing it for the first time, I couldn't get the petrol cap open so I went home to ask my Dad

shan @shanbatla Tbh, I am not sure if I remember how to multiply fractions.

Albert Berg @Albert_Berg You multiply the top numbers to get the top and the bottom numbers to get the bottom. It's really easy actually. Adding fractions on the other hand...
